About this Course

Geographical indications as intellectual property have a unique feature of associating products with their geographical origin, owing to their characteristic or reputation. This module is designed to help you understand the concept of GI and its relevance in the trade economy.

The learning objectives of the module are:

  1. To examine the need for GI protection and the basic concept of GI.
  2. To recognise the procedures involved in the protection of GI.
  3. To analyse issues constituting infringement of GI and its remedial measures.

Are geographical indications the same as collective marks? Would the use of a 'Made in India' label on a product mean that the product has a geographical indication? Well, this course brings you an understanding of the distinction between trademarks, the indication of source, the appellation of origin and GI.
